Twinkie Diet: An Oxymoron or Legitimate Plan?

Okay, so you may have heard of nutrition professor Mark Haub who claims to have lost 27 pounds eating mostly Twinkies.  In fact, for 10 weeks he ate a Twinkie every 3 hours.  He “balanced” out his diet with Oreos, donuts, Doritos, Hostess snacks, and other sugar-loaded junk foods.  Haub claimed that a guy his size should normally consume around 2,600 calories per day, so he restricted himself to 1,800 calories per day–it just all came from junk food.

You would think this sudden all-junk-food-all-the-time diet would lead to a heart attack or, at a minimum, really bad cholesterol.  However, Haub claims his LDL levels (the bad cholesterol) dropped by 20% and his HDL levels (the good cholesterol) went up by 20%.

Initially, Haub said he couldn’t give a firm answer as to whether his junk food diet was a good thing, but recently he said, “People have a hatred towards (processed) foods.  I like them.  I eat them.  It’s amazing how people believe if it’s processed, it’s not food.”  Um, what?  I think this guy is full of it, and I’m not talking Twinkies.  What do you think?

  1. I have heard of this before! I think it’s bogus… he is right saying that losing weight is simply a “calories in, calories out” calculation, but I doubt that you can feel full off of a diet of empty calories. I would also imagine that you would get crazy hunger spikes and energy lags, not to mention sugar headaches! I would never advocate for this diet for my future patients 🙂

  2. It’s interesting that most of the articles about Haub focus only on his weight and cholesterol. What about his iron? Blood sugars? Other nutrients? Not only does the questionable media coverage of this guy fail to look at all the other aspects of being healthy (i.e., nutrients in his system, his moods and mental health, or his physical fitness), but it almost promotes the idea that you can become physically healthy with no effort whatsoever. Madness, I tell ya. Glad to hear you’ll have your patients best interests at heart. 🙂
