Hubby and I spent the weekend out of town to visit friends. I was worried about whether I’d be able to keep up my new healthy lifestyle in another state with all the temptations of a party and food on the road.
I tried to eat healthy. Mostly healthy. Before we departed on Saturday morning, I had fruit for breakfast. I didn’t drink nearly as much water as I usually do because, well, we didn’t have time for a lot of pit stops while we travelled. I had a non-dairy smoothie on the way to our destination. We visited our friends who had a potluck picnic. I noshed on a mixed greens salad, chicken salad, a cookie (just one!), and, later, a little square of veggie frittata. We took a long walk with friends and enjoyed the countryside.
When Hubby and I got to the hotel, I took advantage of the fitness center. While on the elliptical, my left knee said, “Um, this may not be a good idea.” I listened to my body and switched to the treadmill, but only stayed on for a few minutes to get my heart rate up without wrecking my knee. I tried the stationary bike which was when my knee said, “No, really, lady, knock it off.” I switched to the weight machines and free weights, and I did 10 reps of everything. I haven’t used weights in a loooooong time, so I didn’t want to go crazy with it. I returned to our hotel room feeling like I’d maintained my healthy lifestyle.
But then, we went out for dinner. I had oysters for the appetizer, skipped the bread (yay!), and alternated between sips of water and red wine. I couldn’t resist the creamy dishes on the menu, though, and ordered Chilean sea bass with asparagus on a bed of creamy risotto. The risotto was so good. I tried to eat slowly, I tried not to gulp it down, but I had a few bites too many. I felt satisfied and kept going because the risotto. Was. So. Good. I managed not to scarf down the whole dish, but I felt pretty guilty about it. Even though I was on a mini-vacation, I couldn’t totally let go of my healthy lifestyle and relax.
After a long drive home, I felt slightly dehydrated, slightly tight in the muscles, and really, really tired. I decided I needed to refresh and reinvigorate myself. I took a nap, practiced yoga, and ate fruit, almonds, and water. By the time I took a shower, I was feeling back to normal again, and I went for a jog after running some errands. I had to remind myself (again!) that this is a lifestyle, not a quick fix. Even if I fall off the wagon for a day, or just feel like I have, there’s always tomorrow–and the next day, and the day after that. I was reminded of this as we crossed our state line and I saw a sign that said, “It doesn’t matter how long you live, but how well.”
